CookWise – “Cultivating Conscious Consumption: Developing Circular Economy Skills and Sustainable Behaviors to Combat Domestic Food Waste” 2024
COOKWISE Project is an Erasmus+ funded project under cooperation partnerships.
The project aims to empower individuals by promoting sustainable cooking practices, reducing food waste, and fostering a deeper understanding of circular economy principles. Through innovative training programs, digital platforms, and engaging
activities, the project strives to instill lasting changes in behavior and practices related to food preparation and consumption.
Its main goal is to strengthen consumer competences by promoting sustainable culinary practices, ways to reduce food waste and building a deeper understanding of the principles of the circular economy. We intend to achieve this goal by developing engaging content. We want to instill in people permanent changes in behaviours and practices related to the preparation and consumption of food.
Main thematic areas of the project: reduction of food waste, zero waste in the kitchen, circular economy, sustainable culinary practices, ecology, conscious food consumption
The project was created in response to the urgent need to counteract food waste in households. Which has far-reaching consequences for the environment, the economy and social welfare.
According to Eurostat estimates, in 2022, each inhabitant of the EU generated an average of 130 kilograms of food waste. According to the data for individual countries, Cyprus had the highest amount of food waste per capita, at about 400 kg, Greece about 200, while Poland and Bulgaria waste less – 100-130 kg per capita.
The same report shows that households are responsible for producing 42% of food waste. This is mainly due to the lack of consumer awareness, lack of knowledge about the effective use of food, attitudes and inadequate organization of home nutrition (planning and cooking). Fortunately, all causes are reversible.
By developing educational materials on the circular economy, providing tools to measure food waste at home, and strengthening the capacity of adult trainers and training centers, the project aims to instill the principles of conscious consumption and sustainable food handling at home as widely as possible.
In addition, the project was set up to address the insufficient number of specialised training programmes on the circular economy and sustainable culinary practices offered by adult learning centres.
